11am-12.15: Opening plenary:Where are we at and whatgovernments doing about the climate emergency

Speakers:

● David Spratt, author ofClimate Code Red andfounder of Climate Emergency Network – what climate science tells us isnecessary to save the planet

● Emeretta Cross, from theTuvalu and Kiribatiislander communities which are already being effected by climate change

● Katherine Bradstreet – whatare the state andfederal governments doing about climate change and what needs to be done

We’re thinking aboutincluding two three-minute film segments from John Bellamy Foster andRobertoPerez in this plenary.

12.15-1.30pm: 2nd plenary: Debunkingthe myths – discussing solutions

Debunking the myths:

● Hans Baer (MelbourneUniversity lecturer)discusses the technical approaches such as carbon capture/ clean coaland themarket based mechanisms being proposed such as carbon taxes, carbontrading/emissions trading scheme and what is the possibility of the marketdeliveringreal solutions to climate change

● Towards solutions:

● Damien Lawson, Friends ofthe Earth or AdrianWhitehead

● A second speaker

1.30-2.30pm: Lunch

2.30-4pm Workshops:

· Working classcommunities, unions and climatechange - a jobs-richtransition to renewable energy. Unionists from the Latrobe Valley, Harry Van Moorst (WesternRegionEnvironment Centre), and Wayne Klempel (AMWU environment committee)will leadthe discussion).

· Marginalisedcommunities and climate change – Howlow-income communities – rural andurban, indigenous and non-indigenous – will be doubly impacted byglobalchange. Who should respond, and how?

Aim tohave a speaker from an activist oriented welfare organisation inthis workshop. Could involve Brotherhood of St Lawrence or City MissionandFriends of the Earth

· Alterativetechnologies to tackle climatechange – Zero EmissionsNetwork or Beyond Zero Emissions

· The World foodcrisis and climate change – Pat Brewer(Victoria University lecturer)on the food crisis along with MADGE or Gene Ethics and one of theGeelongsustainability groups.

· Production and Consumption as a sourceof globalwarming: Beyond capitalism and toward an alternative world system–Hans Baer and Merrill Singer, co-authors ofa new book on global warming

4.15-5.30pm: Closing plenary:Where do we need to go now?
