Etc/GMT

Date: Wednesday 5th September
Time: 6.30 PM – 8.00 PM
Venue: Friends of the Earth, 312 Smith St. Collingwood.

Carbon Offsets are being offered by an ever growing number of companies and not-for-profit organisations. You can now buy carbon offsets to negate your car, house and airline flight emissions. Their real effectiveness in reducing our carbon impacts has been hotly debated. Our panel will provide a range of informed views and opinions about this important topic. At the end you can decide if carbon offsets are helping to prevent climate change or just allowing us to buy a clean carbon conscious and continue polluting – or somewhere in- between.

Speakers:

Anna Demant – Foundation Manager Lonely Planet Publications– how carbon offsets can be used by travellers to reduce their environmental impact and live the “responsible travel experience” promoted by Lonely Planet.

Brendan Condon - Managing Director, Climate Positive - Brendan’s interest in land and vegetation rehabilitation has matured into a business that sells carbon offsets. He will outline for us how carbon offsetting works and tell us how Climate Positive goes about it.

Elizabeth Wheeler - Friends of the Earth climate justice campaigner - a social and environmental activist for twenty years, Elizabeth listed climate change as just another important issue alongside 50 other important issues until she read George Monbiot's book 'Heat'. She has since stepped up her climate change activism, making lifestyle changes to reduce her own carbon footprint. Elizabeth is very concerned about the trend towards 'carbon offsets', and will critique this most recent attempt to deflect attention from both the responsibilities of people living in the minority world and the root causes of climate change - capitalism, economic growth and consumerism.
